Running cables along the wall so nobody trips over them

A cable stretched across the middle of a room might be the shortest route between two points, but it is also exactly where someone is most likely to catch a foot on it without noticing. Running cables along the edges of the room instead removes this risk almost entirely, without much extra effort.

Cable clips fixed along the skirting board keep everything neatly in place and stop cables from creeping back towards the middle of the floor over time. A few clips placed at sensible intervals hold even longer cables firmly against the wall, rather than letting them sag into the open space.

Think about furniture placement too

Arranging furniture so that cables naturally follow the edges of the room, rather than crossing open walkways, reduces the number of clips or covers needed in the first place. A sofa or bookcase positioned along the same wall as the sockets often solves half the problem before any cables are even run.

For cables that absolutely must cross a walkway, a flat cable cover taped or fixed to the floor is far safer than leaving the cable exposed. These covers are inexpensive and make an enormous difference to how easily people move through the room without a second thought.

Taking the time to tidy cables properly also makes cleaning the room far easier, since a vacuum cleaner or mop can pass along the skirting board without catching on anything. What starts as a safety measure often ends up making the whole room more pleasant to be in.

Households with young children or older relatives visiting benefit even more from this small effort, since trailing cables are one of the easiest hazards to overlook until someone actually trips over one. A tidy skirting board is a small change that quietly removes one more thing to worry about.
